What is Cialis?
Cialis is a long-lasting erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment, which can be effective for up to 36 hours. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping you to achieve erections during that window.
Cialis is the branded, more costly version of the medicine Tadalafil. Both medicines include the same active ingredient and, taken at the same dosage, will work in exactly the same way. We can prescribe both Cialis and Tadalafil. Tadalafil is offered on our Subscribe and Save service, which offers hassle-free repeat orders with a minimum 15% saving. Find out more about Tadalafil.
What is Cialis used for?
Cialis (branded Tadalafil) is mainly used to treat erectile dysfunction in adult men.
Sometimes, it may also be used in the management of lung and prostate conditions.
How does Cialis work?
The active ingredient in Cialis (tadalafil) relaxes blood vessels of the penis, increasing blood flow and therefore helping men to get and maintain an erection when sexually aroused.
Cialis won't treat the underlying physical cause of your ED, increase your sexual desire or help you to last longer before orgasm than you would naturally.
As with all ED medicines, Cialis may not work for you the first time. We'd recommend trying a tablet on up to four separate occasions to find out whether it's effective.
How to take Cialis tablets
Take one Cialis tablet at least 30 minutes before you hope to get an erection. Avoid alcohol as this can affect how well Cialis functions.
Never take more than one tablet within 24 hours and do not combine Cialis with other ED medicines.
Please contact our clinical team through your online patient record if you have further questions about how to take Cialis.
Cialis dosage
Cialis comes in two different dosages: 10mg and 20mg. The standard starting dose is 10mg. If you've already tried taking Cialis 10mg on four separate occasions without the results you hoped for, we may recommend trying the higher dose of 20mg.
Cialis Daily also comes in two dosages: 2.5mg and 5mg.
What is Cialis Daily?
Cialis Daily is a lower dose ED pill, which you take every day instead of just when you think you might need it. This will help you to be ready to get an erection at any time so you can always feel prepared to enjoy spontaneous sexual activity. If you're planning to have sex at least twice each week, Cialis Daily is an option for you.
If suitable, we are able to prescribe Cialis or Cialis Daily so we can help you find whichever treatment is best for you.
How to take Cialis Daily
Take one Cialis Daily tablet at the same time every day. You'll need to be sexually aroused for it to work and you should notice its effect within 3-5 days.
Never take more than one tablet daily and do not combine it with other ED medicines.
Is Cialis effective?
Cialis (branded Tadalafil) is thought to be approximately 60-70% effective in the management of erectile dysfunction for adult men. Cialis Daily can take 3-5 days to reach its peak concentration and deliver effective results.
What are the main side effects of Cialis?
As with all medicines, there is a possibility of experiencing side effects when taking Cialis. It's very important that you read the treatment plan we send if we prescribe Cialis, as well as the Patient Information Leaflet for full details on possible side effects before you begin treatment.
Common side effects with Cialis include headache, lightheadedness, facial flushing, stuffy nose, indigestion, and a pounding heartbeat.
Chest pain is an uncommon, but potentially serious, side effect. If you experience chest pain, get in a semi-sitting position and try to relax by breathing deeply. If you continue to experience pain beyond 15 minutes then call the emergency services straight away.
Prolonged and/or painful erections are a rare side effect. Contact a doctor if you experience this and it still continues after four hours.
You're likely to experience similar side effects when taking Cialis Daily to those mentioned above for Cialis. It's worth noting though that if you've been taking Cialis Daily for a few weeks or more, it will take longer for the drug to leave your body once you stop taking it.
Our clinical team is here to support you; please contact us through your online patient record if you'd like to discuss any side effects you're experiencing.
Please read the Patient Information Leaflet for your medicine before you start taking it:
What else should I know about Cialis?
Cialis should not be taken if you use poppers recreationally or if you have been prescribed a nitrate based medicine, e.g. isosorbide mononitrate or GTN spray. This could result in a fatal drop in blood pressure.
Can I become psychologically dependent on Cialis? No evidence has emerged concerning developing any form of dependence or tolerance with long-term use of Cialis when used appropriately at the advised dose.
However, if used incorrectly to boost sexual performance there could be a possibility of negative side effects and psychological dependence.
It's important only to use ED medicines as instructed by your healthcare provider.
Is Cialis physically addictive? Unlike other medicines, such as opioids, you don't need to worry about physical addiction or suffering with withdrawal effects if you decide to suddenly stop taking Cialis. There is no evidence currently that ED medicines are physically addictive.
Grapefruit can increase the risk of experiencing side effects with Cialis or Cialis Daily. We recommend you avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while you're taking this medicine and for a few days after you finish taking it.
What are alternative ED treatments?
There are many other ED treatments available. If you need help choosing an ED treatment that's right for you, we can help.

How long does Cialis last?
Cialis is sometimes called the 'weekend pill' because its effects can last for up to 36 hours. So if you take a Cialis tablet on a Friday evening, it could help you to achieve erections when aroused through to Sunday.
Will it make me last longer in bed?
Cialis is not designed to increase the amount of time you're able to have sex before orgasm. It supports your body to function the way it naturally would when you feel aroused, helping you to get and stay hard enough for sex.
Erectile dysfunction is not the same as premature ejaculation. If you're experiencing premature ejaculation, we can help.
What is ED?
ED (erectile dysfunction), also referred to as 'impotence', is when a man struggles to get and/or maintain an erection hard enough for sex. It can affect men of any age and for many different reasons. ED is often experienced due to a combination of physical and psychological factors, with reduced blood flow to the penis and associated anxiety about sexual performance.
What causes ED?
There are many different factors that can cause erectile dysfunction, and often there isn't just a single cause.
The main physical factors are reduced flexibility and blood flow in the arteries of the penis. Psychological factors that could contribute to or cause ED include depression, anxiety and stress.
ED can also be experienced as an associated symptom to other health conditions such as high blood pressure or cholesterol, heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Smokers and men who drink large amounts of alcohol are at higher risk of experiencing ED.
What's the difference between Cialis and Tadalafil?
Cialis and Tadalafil are essentially the same; they both include the same active ingredient, tadalafil, and have the same effects. The name, the branding and the price are the only differences.
Cialis tends to be more expensive as a branded medicine. Tadalafil offers the same treatment at a cheaper price.
We also offer Tadalafil and Tadalafil Daily on our Subscribe and Save service, which makes these treatments even cheaper. With Subscribe and Save, you can repeat order Tadalafil for up to 12 months without needing any more consultations, and you'll save at least 15% on each order. It's a cost-effective, hassle-free way to make sure you've always got the ED treatment you need, when you need it.
