What is orforglipron?
Orforglipron is a new glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes that should be available in 2026. Like other GLP-1 treatments such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide), it works by making you feel fuller for longer, slowing down your digestion and helping keep your blood sugar levels even. However, unlike other GLP-1 treatments currently available, orforglipron will be a tablet that you take every day, making it much easier for people to use.
Are there other oral GLP-1 treatments in development?
Yes, the makers of Wegovy (semaglutide), Novo Nordisk, have developed an oral form of the treatment that is taken as a tablet once a day. Oral Wegovy became available in the US at the end of 2025 but is still unavailable in the UK.
How is orforglipron different from oral Wegovy?
Orforglipron is manufactured by Eli Lilly, the makers of Mounjaro. It’s taken as a tablet once a day and can be taken with or without food and water.
The oral form of Wegovy is manufactured by Novo Nordisk, the makers of Wegovy injections. Unlike orforglipron, oral Wegovy is also taken once a day but must be taken on an empty stomach with no more than 100ml (just under ½ cup) of water, followed by a 30-minute fast before eating, drinking, or taking other medicines .
Like other GLP-1 treatments, both tablets are started at a low dose, with a gradual increase in dose strength every four weeks.
How to take Wegovy?
Wegovy comes in a pre-filled injection pen. To use it, you inject yourself just under the skin once a week. The pen has been designed to make it very easy to use, even if you’ve never used something like this before. You can watch our video to see how to use Wegovy.
Wegovy should be injected on the areas with the most fat, such as your belly (but not within 5cm of your belly button), your upper arms or thighs. You can inject Wegovy in the same area each time (like the upper thigh) but it’s important to change your injection sites and choose a different spot each time.
How does orforglipron compare to other GLP-1 treatments?
Direct studies comparing orforglipron to other GLP-1 treatments are limited. However, during phase 2 trials, patients using orforglipron showed an average overall weight loss of 10-15%of their original weight over 36 weeks. How these results compare to other GLP-1 treatments on the market can be seen here:
| Treatment | Overall average weight loss over 36 weeks (percentage of original weight lost) |
| Orforglipron | 10 - 15% |
| Wegovy | 15 - 17% |
| Mounjaro | 21 - 22% |
| Nevolat | 5 - 8% |
How to take orforglipron?
Orforglipron will likely be taken as one tablet, once a day, with or without food. Once orforglipron becomes available, we’ll be able to provide complete instructions on how to take the medicine.
What are the main side effects of orforglipron?
The side effects noted during clinical trials were mild and similar to those found in other GLP-1 treatments like Wegovy and Mounjaro.
The most common side effects included:
- nausea
- vomiting
- indigestion
- diarrhoea
- constipation
More serious side effects were much less common. We’ll know more about all of the potential side effects as the clinical trials continue and additional data is being collected.
When will orforglipron be available in the UK?
The manufacturers of orforglipron are planning to submit the treatment for licensing in the UK at the end of 2025. This means that the earliest it will become available is some time in 2026.
How much will orforglipron cost?
Although we don’t know yet how much the makers of orforglipron are planning to charge for the tablets, they’re likely to have a similar cost to begin with as other injectable GLP-1 treatments.
What else should I know about orforglipron?
As with other GLP-1 treatments, orforglipron will not be suitable for everyone. Orforglipron will likely only be approved for people who meet specific criteria and who also have weight-related health problems such as prediabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart problems.
Orforglipron is unlikely to be recommended if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
When orforglipron becomes available, you will need to give us a full medical history and details of any conditions or other medicines you’re taking when you fill out our online questionnaire. This ensures we’ll be able to prescribe orforglipron if it’s suitable and safe for you.
What are alternative weight loss treatments?
Until orforglipron becomes available, there are other treatments to help support your weight loss and weight management journey. Speak to your GP or healthcare provider, or visit our Weight Loss Treatment service for more information.
