If you’re currently taking Wegovy or are considering weight loss treatment options, you may have heard that a new, higher-strength dose of Wegovy has recently become available.

In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about the new dose, including how it works, how effective it is and who can use it.

What is Wegovy 7.2mg?

Before we discuss the new dose, it’s useful to know what Wegovy is and how it works. It’s a weekly injectable weight loss treatment containing the ingredient semaglutide, which works by helping you feel fuller and reducing cravings.

Until recently, the highest available dose for Wegovy was 2.4mg. A new 7.2mg dose became available in the UK on 12 January 2026. Once it’s available at Boots Online Doctor, you’ll be able to order it on our website.

The new dose will be prescribed as three 2.4mg pens, where three doses are taken together to make up one weekly dose of 7.2mg. A single 7.2mg pen may become available at a later date.

Who is Wegovy 7.2mg for?

This Wegovy 7.2mg dose has been developed for patients who are stable at the highest current dose of 2.4mg with minimal to no side effects, but who need to lose more weight or have reached a weight loss plateau.

If you’d like to increase your dose or are thinking about switching to Wegovy, there are options available – we can review your treatment plan and recommend the most appropriate medicine and dose depending on your medical history, current plan and experience with side effects. Just send us a message in your patient record.

If you’re concerned about your weight loss progress, keep in mind that weight loss plateaus and other changes are normal. Successful, long-term weight loss is about much more than just medicine – building healthy eating and lifestyle habits you can stick to is key. Our service offers a range of support along the way, including a podcast, weekly webinars, a 10-week programme, exercise videos and more.

How effective is Wegovy 7.2mg?

This dose works in the same way as other Wegovy doses, but it’s significantly stronger. In clinical trials, patients lost an average of 20.7%* on the 7.2mg dose, with one in three people achieving 25% or more weight loss.

Side effects are expected to be similar to the 2.4mg dose, mostly affecting the digestive system such as stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. There was no increase in serious side effects in clinical trials. Like other weight loss treatments, side effects can be more frequent the higher the dose, but it’s important to remember that side effects vary from person to person.

One side effect known as dysaesthesia, which is an unpleasant burning feeling on your skin, is more common at the 7.2mg dose. However, this gets better over time in most people and you won’t need to stop taking treatment if you experience dysaesthesia.

What’s the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Mounjaro and Wegovy are both weekly injection pens and work in similar ways to help with weight loss.

Mounjaro works on two different hormonal receptors: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), whereas Wegovy only works on GLP-1. Mounjaro results in 21% weight loss on average, and Wegovy results in 15% average loss. Although Wegovy isn’t quite as effective as Mounjaro, it still helps you lose weight.
