What is Clenil Modulite?

Clenil Modulite is an inhaler used to prevent the symptoms of asthma. This is also known as a preventer inhaler. Asthma is a common, long-term lung condition that affects your breathing. People with asthma can be more easily triggered by things like allergens or irritants causing the airways to become inflamed and narrow. The inflammation causes chest tightness, shortness of breath or a wheezing sound from the chest, making it difficult to breathe.

Clenil Modulite inhaler helps to reduce inflammation, which in turn helps to widen the airways and improve breathing. It’s designed to be used daily to help prevent asthma symptoms from occurring. If you have asthma, using a preventer inhaler like Clenil Modulite can be an important part of your treatment plan.

What is Clenil Modulite used for?

Clenil Modulite is an inhaler used to manage and prevent the symptoms of asthma, including wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

How does Clenil Modulite work?

The active ingredient in Clenil Modulite is beclometasone, which is in the medicine group corticosteroids (often referred to simply as steroids). Steroids have an anti-inflammatory effect, acting to reduce inflammation and swelling in your airways. With regular use of your Clenil Modulite inhaler as prescribed, your airways should react less to your asthma triggers and help prevent the symptoms of asthma and asthma attacks.

How to use Clenil Modulite

The Clenil Modulite inhaler is a hand-held device that delivers the medicine directly to the lungs.

How to use the Clenil Modulite inhaler:

  • Shake it well before use and then breathe out as much air as you can.
  • Put the mouthpiece of the inhaler in your mouth and press down on the top of the inhaler to release one puff while breathing in slowly and deeply.
  • Hold your breath for 10 seconds or for as long as is comfortable and then breathe out slowly. If you need to take another dose please wait 30 seconds and repeat the process.

For more detailed information on how best to use your inhaler, please read the manufacturer’s instructions. Clenil user guide

Good inhaler technique is really important to ensure that enough medicine reaches your lungs, but it can be difficult to get right. Watch a video on how to use this type of inhaler. If you’re at all unsure, please pop into one of our Boots stores and ask your pharmacist to show you.

If you've followed these instructions but still find using your inhaler difficult, please discuss the option of using a device called a spacer with your GP or in store Pharmacist.

When your inhaler is new or hasn’t been used for three days or more, make sure that it’s working properly by releasing one puff into the air.

Clenil Modulite dosage

Clenil Modulite is available from us in different strengths: Clenil Modulite 100, Clenil Modulite 200, and Clenil Modulite 250. All Clenil Modulite inhalers are to be used twice daily. Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate strength and dose of Clenil based on the severity of your condition and your individual treatment plan. Each inhaler contains 200 puffs and there is an indicator on the device that tells you how many doses are left. It’s recommended that you should order your next inhaler when the dose indicator shows that there are 20 puffs left.

Is Clenil Modulite effective?

Preventer inhalers are not fast acting and it’s important to use it daily as prescribed to help improve asthma symptoms. This inhaler contains a steroid and it can take from a few days to a few weeks to see an effect. However, if you don't notice any changes in your symptoms after a few days, please contact us or speak with your regular healthcare provider to determine the best course of action.

Good asthma control means

  • you have symptoms less than 3 times a week during the day
  • no symptoms during exercise; and
  • no symptoms at night.

If you're still experiencing asthma symptoms after taking Clenil Modulite for a few days, please speak to your GP or asthma nurse as you may require a change in your asthma treatment plan. You should use your reliever inhaler if you’re experiencing sudden asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing.

What are the main side effects of Clenil Modulite?

The common side effects to watch out for when using the Clenil inhaler are: oral thrush, and sometimes a sore throat or hoarse voice. You should wash your mouth with water after use or use a spacer to reduce the risk of these. Please do not exceed the dose prescribed.

Spacers are small plastic tubes where you insert your inhaler into one end of the spacer and inhale the medicine through the other end.

They help you maximise the effectiveness of your medicine when using a metered dose inhaler and reduce side effects.

Please read the Patient Information Leaflet for this medicine to find out more.

If you’re taking more than 1000 micrograms of beclometasone a day (for example, 2 puffs twice a day of Clenil Modulite 250), you’re on a high dose of corticosteroids. You should receive a Patient Information Leaflet when collecting your medicine and you should also carry a steroid card. This will alert healthcare professionals to the fact that you might need some extra corticosteroids to help you deal with serious illness or surgery.

What else should I know about Clenil Modulite?

Some medicines may not be appropriate for individuals with certain conditions, and some can only be used with additional precautions. If you’re pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding, it's crucial to manage your asthma effectively during pregnancy, and your doctor will provide guidance on your care.

If you have a history of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), if you're currently taking any other medicines—whether prescription, over-the-counter, or herbal supplements—or if you have previously experienced an allergic reaction to a medicine, please ensure you tell your healthcare provider. We also need to if you’ve ever been to the hospital for severe asthma symptoms and how you were treated.

What are alternative treatments to Clenil?

Other preventer inhalers include Pulmicort Turbohaler and Qvar Aerosol Inhaler, Qvar Easi-Breathe Inhaler and Qvar Autohaler. These inhalers all contain a form of steroids and work in similar ways to reduce inflammation in the airways and manage asthma symptoms. However, they each have slightly different properties and are different devices. Please follow your asthma treatment as directed by your healthcare professional.

If you suffer from asthma, you should also have a reliever inhaler for if you're experiencing an asthma attack. Find out more about the different types of asthma inhalers.

What are the non-drug alternatives to Clenil?

You should always follow your GP’s instructions for using your inhaler. Alongside this, there are some other things you can do to help manage your asthma. Getting a handle on your triggers can really help reduce asthma attacks. Some occupations are known to make asthma worse. If you have more symptoms whilst at work or you’re much better at the weekends or on holiday, then your job may be affecting your asthma. Discuss this at your next annual asthma review.

Stopping smoking will help your asthma and reduce how much medicine you need.

If you’re overweight, losing weight is likely to improve your symptoms and make it easier to control your asthma.

We also recommend:

  • Using a Peak Flow Monitor to stay on top of your asthma (available to buy from your local Boots pharmacy or on prescription)
  • Booking an asthma review with your GP or asthma nurse if you haven’t had one in the past year
  • Getting your inhaler technique checked

Cleaning your inhaler

You should clean your Clenil Modulite inhaler once a week. When cleaning, do not remove the canister from the case and do not use water or other liquids to clean your inhaler.

To clean your inhaler:

  • 1. Remove the protective cap from the mouthpiece.
  • 2. Use a clean cotton swab to clean the small circular opening where the medicine sprays out of the canister. Gently twist the swab in a circular motion to take off any residue.
  • 3. Replace the mouthpiece cover
Can Clenil Modulite make you gain weight?

Clenil Modulite contains a steroid but as this is an inhaler, the risk of weight gain is low.

When does Clenil Modulite run out?

Each inhaler has 200 doses and when the canister is pushed, the dose indicator rotates by a small amount. The number of puffs remaining is displayed in intervals of 20. Clenil Modulite is a prescription and once 20 doses are left, the next inhaler should be requested through your regular GP or submitted via a Boots Online Doctor consultation.

Inhaler disposal

The inhalers should be returned to the pharmacy for safe disposal.
